One question that bands will ask themselves quite often is do they need a manager?
With so many more promoters and gig venues offering up slots for bands to play, many new bands may feel as though they can get a head start without the need for any additional help. This is probably for the best in the short run though as it will allow the band to develop at their own pace and not be influenced by too many external factors. There will come a time though when the need for experience and a different viewpoint can come in handy for any band.
Some bands like to have a friend they trust to look after their activities. It may just be the simple things like booking gigs or rehearsal times but knowing that someone outside of the band has responsibility for these matters can be of comfort to the band. It also means that if any disagreements arise within the band, there is an external party who can make a decision based on all the various viewpoints within the group. Whether the person can be objective if they are close to certain band members is a different matter and this is where it may be good to have a completely impartial band manager making decisions.
Not only can a totally external band manager help to keep the peace, they can offer contacts and experience of the industry to push the band on. This may mean better support slots for the band or gaining access to better producers and recording studios. Bands should always be on the lookout for help and assistance wherever they can and if a new manager can push them further up the ladder, it is well worth considering. Of course, this experience comes at a price and the band will have to shell out more money to obtain the services of the manager. But this should be well worth the investment. So be sure that the managers cut comes from actual profits he creates.
